This Epic Collection presents early classics including the first appearance of Banshee; the brief tenure of the sixth X-Man, Mimic; the complete Factor Three saga; the "Origins of the X-Men" feature exploring Professor X's formation of the team; and the debut of new costumes! In the first Epic Collection, Stan Lee & Jack Kirby set up the X-Men and introduced many of the themes and characters that would define the X-Men franchise. There was some subtle nuance delivered in some stories and a deftness in story telling that holds up pretty well even today. I mean, these were still very much Silver Age adventures but it was more or less a solid foundation for a series. In this volume... it feels like everything is just spinning in place. I believe this was Roy Thomas's first full time writing assignment with Marvel and it shows. The book has a "Villain of the Month" feel to it and while Thomas continues to explore the personal lives of the X-Men, by the end of the volume, all of those subplots and civilian moments are completely forgotten. There are some stand-out moments here and there. Banshee makes his first appearance and comes back a few times to guest star. The series makes an attempt to "permanently" change the status quo, killing off both Professor Xavier and Magneto (Though the Grotesk storyline where Xavier's death occurs is not a strong story arc). Magneto's death occurs at the end of a short crossover with the Avengers (actually IN Avengers #53) and it's pretty clear that Roy Thomas, who had already left the X-Men title, was more comfortable writing the Avengers than Marvel's Merry Mutants. At least for now. Thomas comes back in the next volume aided by Neal Adams' illustrations and writes one of the most definitive X-Men runs (IMO). But, for now, he certainly didn't bring his "A" game.On art, we have the talents of Werner Roth, Don Heck, and George Tuska, with a number of others pitching in here and there. Roth is probably my favorite of the bunch, delivering some nice panel storytelling as well as really good facial expressions. I liked Don Heck's work but there's a stiffness to it that is typical of his output. I think Heck's best work was on Iron Man and Avengers but it's more than competent, here. George Tuska was a pleasant surprise with some excellent figure work but there are a few weird faces mixed in and some odd panel layouts. The art is still nice to look at but when John Buscema shows up in Avengers #53, he shows exactly what the difference between top tier Marvel art was like at the time compared to the X-Men. Dynamic panel layouts and professional figure work make the X-Men look great. More work of this quality will show up in the next volume as some highly skilled artists realized that no one was expecting much from the title and they were free to cut loose without much interference. The book concludes with two X-Men related stories from Not Brand Echh. These were parody stories that... aren't really all that funny... but they show that the writers had some self awareness of the title's weaknesses. The art by Tom Sutton is really good stuff, too. Maybe I'm a sucker for a more cartoonish style but these panels look better and show more polish than the rest of the volume.So... this book is not all that great. The "it's a Silver Age book" defense doesn't really work here, either, because even at the time, these are the stories where readers started falling away from the title. If you're like me and enjoy the history behind a series, including all the highs and lows, then you don't even need a review! You've already picked this book up and you will enjoy it for what it is. But if you're a more casual X-Men fan and you're just looking for the good stuff, you can safely avoid this book. This collection of comics is a slog to read. I enjoyed the history behind them and it definitely sits well between Children of the Atom and The Sentinels Live... but this is a low point in the book and I believe is likely the reason why X-Men didn't have the same number of readers as other Marvel titles. I've heard it theorized that had Stan Lee remained on the title a little longer (and kept writing solid stories), things might have been different with the X-Men book. As things stood, the title struggled with sales and eventually went into reprints. But we have a whole other volume of stories to read before that happens. And, really, it does us no good to hypothesize. Stan Lee was writing too many titles, Roy Thomas had to start writing somewhere, and the X-Men eventually got its chance to shine, both creatively and monetarily.Just... not yet.
