Philip Carlo's The Ice Man spent over six weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List. Top Mob Hitman. Devoted Family Man. Doting Father. For thirty years, Richard "The Iceman" Kuklinski led a shocking double life, becoming the most notorious professional assassin in American history while happily hosting neighborhood barbecues in suburban New Jersey. Richard Kuklinski was Sammy the Bull Gravano's partner in the killing of Paul Castellano, then head of the Gambino crime family, at Sparks Steakhouse. Mob boss John Gotti hired him to torture and kill the neighbor who accidentally ran over his child. For an additional price, Kuklinski would make his victims suffer; he conducted this sadistic business with coldhearted intensity and shocking efficiency, never disappointing his customers. By his own estimate, he killed over two hundred men, taking enormous pride in his variety and ferocity of technique. This trail of murder lasted over thirty years and took Kuklinski all over America and to the far corners of the earth, Brazil, Africa, and Europe. Along the way, he married, had three children, and put them through Catholic school. His daughter's medical condition meant regular stays in children's hospitals, where Kuklinski was remembered, not as a gangster, but as an affectionate father, extremely kind to children. Each Christmas found the Kuklinski home festooned in colorful lights; each summer was a succession of block parties. His family never suspected a thing.Richard Kuklinski is now the subject of the major motion picture titled "The Iceman"(2013), starring James Franco, Winona Ryder, Ray Liotta, and Chris Evans.

I have read tons of mafia books. I am ashamed I fell for this load of trash. I made it to about page 225 when I finally could take no more. The straw that broke the camel's back? The story where Kuklinski is on his way back to New Jersey from Florida where he went to perform yet another ridiculous torture-murder where he cut off a guy's genetalia then cut out fillets of the guy's flesh then went to his car and got salt to pour in the guys wounds. On the way home going through South Carolina a carload of rednecks, complete with rebel flag in the window, inexplicably pull along side him calling him n-word lover. He pulls off at a rest stop and, what do you know, so do they and they get out of their van and come at him with clubs. So, as had already happened like fifty times up to that point in the book, of course he pulls out a gun and blows them all away and simply drives off and no one ever sees anything and he is never even suspected of the murder.Right out of the gate is the story about the rats which is totally preposterous and I should have just stopped there and saved myself. But its story after story where you say surely someone would have seen something and/or reported this guy. He cuts off both the nipples of his first wife when (surprise) he walks in on her having sex with another guy. (He also walked in on his mother having sex with another guy, his brother having oral sex in the bathroom stall at a gay bar, and 2 guys raping a teenage boy behind a semi-truck). So his ex-wife apparently just went through the rest of her life nipple-less and never said a word? Come On.And oh yeah the guy who won't tell Richard what happened to a truck full of stolen goods that Richard was storing at the guy's barn. Richard proceeds to take a roadside flare and burn both of the guys' feet off until all the flesh is gone and bones are sticking out. The guy still wont tell so he burns the guy's testicles off. Finally only after Richard starts to burn the guy's penis off does the guy tell them he gave it to a friend. Richard goes and gets the truck, kills the friend, then goes back to the burned guy and kills him too.So finally I reached my breaking point and thought there have to be others who feel the same way so I went to the one-star reviews of this book and literally laughed out loud as I read other people saying the same things I was. And I never even got to the parts where he supposedly was in on the Galante, Castellano and Hoffa hits.I am embarrassed to admit that when I bought this book I was really excited and bought two other Philip Carlo books at the same time, The Butcher and Gaspipe. I won't even bother wasting my time on the others and literally just threw all three of these books in the garbage.
